Curiosity
Definition: When there is a bit of uncertainty about an outcome, people are more motivated to take action and have more enjoyable experiences.
Example: We use the principle of curiosity through intriguing questions in subject lines, providing the user with a hint of what to expect in their kit. We also share surprising facts and enticing snippets of information, like in this example where a sticker on the box playfully teases what’s inside and how it can benefit the user.
Sunk Cost
Definition: People tend to follow through on a course of action if they have already invested time, effort, or money into it – whether or not the current costs outweigh the benefits.
Example: We use the principle of sunk cost by reminding users of the effort they have already put in towards using their device. In this example, we send a push notification to users who completed pairing and a welcome visit but didn’t add their family members. We use phrases like “you’re almost there” to remind them that they have already done most of the work, and one final step remains, making them more likely to complete this last step.
Social Proof
Definition: In new or uncertain situations, people often look to others to decide how to act, following the crowd to fit their own behavior to what’s expected.
Example: We use the principle of social proof through user testimonials, product reviews, infographics based on user feedback, and messaging about how “other families like yours” use TytoCare. In this example, both user testimonials and product ratings from two different sources are used to let people know that many others have used and liked TytoCare.
Mental Model
Definition: A person’s unique set of beliefs, perceptions, and understanding of the world; this is continually evolving and can be influenced by the right messaging and user interactions.
Example: We create a new mental model for the user through carefully positioned questions and context for what TytoHome is and when to use it. In this example, we guide users through a short quiz to consider whether TytoHome is a good fit for them. This is a deliberate friction point, designed to help users understand how and when to use TytoHome, and to ensure it suits their needs. This way, those who claim are aligned with us on the product, increasing the likelihood of future adoption.
Feedback & Progress
Definition: When feedback is provided to a user to help them track their progress toward a goal, it helps motivate them to continue toward reaching that goal.
Example: We use the feedback & progress principle by incorporating progress bars to show the user how much they have already accomplished and by explaining the steps remaining, in the context of what’s been completed. In this example, both the grayed-out steps that have been completed and the animated progress bar let the user know that they are already on the way there.
